What do Atheists think about the question "Why did Jesus Have to die?"?

I am doing an Apologetic paper on this question and need the view point of an Atheist on this subject matter. This is a serious question so I expect a serious answer. Please do not argue or throw your beliefs at each other. For someone who does not believe in God, how would you respond when someone asks you "Why do you think Jesus had to die?". Do you just simply say "There is no God so your question is irrelevant" or is there something deeper you have to offer?
