Confusing guy. i need help!!!?

So this guy is my ex. We have been dating on and off for the past year. One minute he loves me, the next he won't talk to me at. all. Every time we have a date planned he always flakes out but he always is really apologetic. So for the past month or so we have just been a "thing" meaning we aren't in an official relationship we are just a lot more than regular friends. About a week ago he stopped saying he loved me and I was a little confused about this. now he won't even talk to me anymore at all. Im soooo confused about this! should I stop trying to contact him? What the hell does this mean?!
