Difference between workshop and factory?

even though you might see these words listed as synonyms, "workshop" has somewhat of a positive connotation -- "santa's workshop," "writer's workshop" -- whereas factory implies tedious, low-paying, regimented work. moreover, a workshop (25 people or less) is generally smaller than an entire factory that implies hundreds of workers.
